James R. Matarazzo, Sr., 73, of North Caldwell, N.J., died on July 17, 2019. Visitation will be on Wednesday, July 24, 2019 from 3-8 p.m. at Shook’s Cedar Grove Funeral Home, 486 Pompton Ave., Cedar Grove, N.J. Funeral Services will be private. Condolences and memories may be shared at

Jim was a lifelong resident of North Caldwell. He was a member of the first graduating class of West Essex High School and went on to Villanova University, where he received his Bachelor’s Degree. Jim was a proud Villanovan, a loyal fan to the basketball team, and was able to witness three championships throughout his lifetime.

As a dedicated resident of North Caldwell, Jim was quite active within his community. He served on the Town Council from 1971-1987 and was Mayor from 1987 through 2002. He volunteered as a fireman with the North Caldwell Fire Department beginning in 1971 and was a N.J. State Exempt Firefighter. For many years, he was a member of The Knights of Columbus and UNICO, and was awarded UNICO’s Man of the Year in 1998.

Above all, his passion was the farm, Matarazzo Farms, where he worked the land and provided plants and produce to his community. He loved the earth like you love your children. One would often find Jim driving his tractor around the property. His heart was big, maybe that is why it gave out. It was so big he couldn't turn a homeless vet or a downtrodden soul down ever and employed them at the farm. Every soup kitchen in Essex County knew Jim and revered him for never forgetting all those less fortunate.

In his spare time, he coached Girls’ Softball and began a Men’s Softball Team in North Caldwell.

Predeceased by his parents, Constantino “Joe” and Margaret Matarazzo, his sister, Dolores “Dolly” Paulison, and his faithful dog, Nugget. He is survived by his beloved wife, Jeannie M. (nee: Alliston) Matarazzo; devoted children, James R. Matarazzo, Jr., Kim Matarazzo Conlon, and her husband, Ed, and Coreen “Cory” Matarazzo-Blaine, and her husband, Sheldon; cherished grandchildren, Juliana, Gabriela, Gemma Rose, and Sheldon, Jr.; dear brother, Robert “Matty” Matarazzo, and his wife, Laura; and loving canine companion, Scooby.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to Toni’s Kitchen, c/o St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 73 S. Fullerton Ave., Montclair, N.J. 07042,, or Missionaries of Charity, 168 Sussex Ave., Newark, NJ 07103.

“To the family of james matarrazo, my husband and i extend our deepest sympathy . As residents of ramsey we had the pleasure and honor to meet jim every weekend at the ramsey farmer market. We feel very blessed to have known him. He would greet us every week at your farm stand with a great big smile and talk life, and produce with us! Although we did not know him outside of the market his sincere, humble, personality showed always. He would made my week with a bouquet of flowers. Rest peacefully”

Jim was one in a million. He made me laugh, he made me think, he made me fuss at him for some of the things he said (sans a filter!), but he and I always found our way back to each other. DaBoyz loved coming to see "Grandpa Farmer Jim" on Saturdays, and chose new things each week to try. Such a hard working, dedicated man. My love goes out to the entire family. It won't be the same without him.

Jim Matarazzo was one in a million, a real man's man, good heart, tough competitor, never afraid to have dirt under his fingernails. Always had a story, and always had time to hear yours. Will miss stopping by the farm to see him on our travels back to NC from Naples, Fl. Seem to remember asking him if he had a list of plants deer will leave alone. His response was something along, " yea Joe I have a list of plants the deer are supposed to leave alone, problem is they don't have the list and they can't read". Classic Jim Matarazzo! We just lost another good one, rest in peace Jim, you will be missed by many.

Joe Jackson, former NC resident, 33 yrs.
