Obituary

David Chi-Yuan Woo was born on Sept. 15, 1939 in Shanghai, China as the oldest son in a family of 4 siblings and was married to Mannor Woo in NYC. The family resided in various parts of NJ. He originally came to the US in the 60’s on a scholarship to pursue his graduate studies in Physiology at the University of Pennsylvania. David’s career path led him to the pharmaceutical industry in the Department of Experimental Pathology and Toxicology at Hoffman La Roche where he published several research papers in the area of Experimental Teratology. He completed an additional graduate degree at Stevens Institute of Technology in Biostatistics and went on to work in the research areas at Ortho Diagnostics/JandJ, Pfizer and Novartis and had the unique understanding of both the clinical and the statistical sides of the business, both of which are critical to clinical research.

He always loved science and greatly admired the winners of the Nobel Prize and the breakthrough science they discovered. He also had a passion for travel and especially liked cruises where he was able to enjoy everything on the boat from the food to the entertainment without ever having to move his luggage. He’s been to many places on vacation including various states in the US, Spain, Portugal, Italy, the UK, the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Denmark, Sweden and Norway as well as several trips to the Caribbean and even took the famous Queen Anne cruise line. Last year he was able to take a Disney cruise with his daughter, Tiffany and had the chance to dance with Cinderella! Ballroom dancing and music were his other favorites and he just loved any chance to get on the dance floor and show his skills. He loved the opportunity to dance with one of the Dancing with the Stars pros and was very proud of that moment. All the classic singers like Frank Sinatra, Patti Page, and Patsy Cline and songs like the Tennessee Waltz and La Vie en Rose were among his Top 10 favorites.

As a father, he was so proud when his daughter was born that he spent a whole night dyeing the eggs red to bring to the office to share the good news in the Chinese tradition. He loved spending each evening laughing and giggling with his baby as well as telling jokes when his daughter got older. He loved a good laugh and would always read the comics section of the newspaper. Perhaps old school but he still enjoyed a good book and a newspaper in hand and loved using the local library. Reading was his passion and he always wanted to learn more. He also had other hobbies like picture framing where most of the household frames were done all by himself and even took courses in real estate and being a travel agent and aced all of the licensing requirements even though he didn’t pursue it as a career. He was a perpetual student and always craved to learn more about everything.

He greatly helped his daughter last year as the other caregiver of his wife, Mannor Woo until she passed away in July, 2018. His own battle with pancreatic cancer was courageously fought long and hard over 2 years but he finally succumbed to it’s wrath. He is survived by his daughter, Tiffany who will forever miss her very special Daddy who was her protector, her mentor, and her role model.

It was a great honor and a privilege to have met David as we spent a very pleasant evening during a fundraising event earlier this year together with Tiff and my wife Anna. David was a wonderful man and shared with me details around his research work in Teratology, which I pretended to understand while realizing that he was so out of my league. I am also very proud that together with David we fought off several attempts by busboys as they tried to take his hors d'oeuvres away, and yes, we won. I will forever remember our short yet quality time that we spent together that evening. Anna and I want to extend our heartfelt condolences to Tiff and to David's family and loved ones. May his memory be everlasting. - Eli & Anna Triantafyllou
