Robert Joseph Goldstein

Robert Joseph Goldstein, of Cedar Grove, N.J., formerly of Montclair, N.J., passed from this world on November 10, 2019. He was predeceased by his parents, Sara Donohue Goldstein and William Goldstein and his brothers, William and Edward Goldstein. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Marion Goldstein; children, Robert (Erin) Goldstein, of Little Falls, N.J., Kathleen Zanowic, of Alexandria, VA, Dennis (Beth) Goldstein, of Weston, MA, Edward (Barbara) Goldstein, of Bloomfield, N.J., and Kurtis (Katherine) Goldstein, of Morris Plains, N.J.; and his thirteen grandchildren, Brendan (Samantha), Cara, Colin, Tristan, Casey, Ryan, Devin, Sara, Annie, James, Irene, Zachary, and Sophie. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law, Claire and Kay Goldstein, and in-laws Raymond (MaryAnn) Winheim, Dorothy Winheim, and Lorraine (Steve) Gordon.

Bob was born in Brooklyn, NY on August 16, 1938. He is a graduate of Regis High School (’56) and St. Peter’s University (BS ’60, MBA ‘05). Thereafter, he built a long career in the insurance industry. In 1971, he founded R. J. Goldstein and Associates, an independent insurance brokerage agency. He was particularly proud to work alongside his eldest son, Robert, who carried the business forward.

Bob was a proud alumnus of Regis High School, a school for which his affection and gratitude never wavered. This gratitude extended to his dear friends and classmates in the class of ’56 who honored him with an endowed scholarship fund in his name. He loved St. Peter’s University and the close friendships it afforded him over the years. He was honored to serve on the school’s Board of Regents (‘98-’07) and Board of Trustees (‘07-’18). During this time he served on the Board’s Executive Committee, chaired the Athletics Committee and co-chaired the school’s Business Symposium. He received the Loyalty to Alma Mater award in 2018. Bob was also a longtime member and former president of the Glen Ridge Country Club.

Bob will be remembered for his wit and facility with numbers, his love of the Mets, golf and the one-liner. But Bob’s greatest accomplishment and deepest pride was his family. He felt he was the “luckiest guy in the world” to have the love of his wife, children and grandchildren. He was very likely to share their “accomplishments” (some of which were true) soon after meeting you.

To my friend Bob. We met quite a few years ago, I don't remember exactly how many. We always had a good laugh while reminiscing about our old neighborhoods. Yours in Brooklyn, mine in Montclair. We shared (and bragged) about our families with expressed joy and pride. I'll never forget your kindness and generosity that was extended to me over the years and will always be grateful for. Be at peace and God Bless You. Your Friend, Joe Cutalo

So sorry to hear of Bob's passing. He was an awesome individual; always with a chuckle and an obscure fact. I will miss him always. My condolences
